Overview:   The Quality Manager will provide leadership to the Quality Assurance Technicians, champion and develop Steam Whistle’s Quality Assurance program covering all steps of the brewing process, ensure the beer meets agreed standards, develop and review quality standards and processes.  



·         Provide leadership and expertise in the development, implementation, and reassessment of Quality Assurance Programs and Quality Control

·         Mentor and coach Quality Assurance Technicians, providing support and training as necessary

·         Ensure that the Quality Assurance team is accurately reporting and maintaining QA data and information

           Ensure required and relevant analysis at every stage of the process is conducted accurately and timely

·         Champion the Quality Assurance improvement efforts, and initiate problem-solving initiatives

·         Develop and maintain Standard Operation Procedures for the laboratory, and provide recommendations to other areas of Production with respect to SOPs

·         Trouble-shoot problems associated with Production, ensure root cause/corrective actions are appropriate and in place

·         Use customer feedback and process information to inform process improvement initiatives

·         Establish employee goals and objectives and conduct regular employee performance reviews

·         Champion the Quality Assurance Program, communicating, and encouraging a quality-first philosophy in all staff – drive for continual improvement

  • Oversee and assist in various microbiological tests:
    • Aseptic sampling of, fermenters, aging tanks, bright beer tanks, etc….
    • Media preparation
    • Pour plating, filter plating
    • Plate examination, colony morphologies, microscopic examination
  • Manage the monitoring of shelf life; shelf-life taste tests and turbidity monitoring
  • Oversee aspects in microbiological, analytical and sensory evaluation
  • Conduct regular and various audits, collate various reports and data, interpreting results and report back to the Brewmaster
  • Produce departmental, team and individual KPI’s
  • Manage laboratory supplies inventory
  • Comply with Health & Safety regulations    

Experience and qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a science field such as Food Science or Microbiology
  • 5 years'  experience in brewery and/or food and beverage industry
  • Proven leadership experience working within a Quality Assurance department preferably within a brewery
  • Knowledge of good laboratory/manufacturing practices, experienced in cGMP/GMP, GPL and HACCP
  • Experience in quality auditing and inspection methods
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to interact confidently and effectively with multiple departments/staff
  • Project management experience
  • Attention to detail is critical
  • Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently
