Modern Times Beer- General Manager, Los Angeles



The General Manager reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for the operational excellence of the Dojo Dankness, including the recruitment, engagement, and management of its leadership team and employees, its ability to consistently exceed customers’ expectations, and its performance against key performance indicators. The General Manager will ensure that the highest quality vegan food, beer, and coffee are being prepared and served on site and will assist in managing the calendar and logistics of the on-site pilot brewery. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.



  • Oversee the execution of the property’s café, pilot brewery, tasting room, and restaurant on a daily basis
  • Create an environment that encourages ownership, accountability, and maintains the highest standards of coffee, beer, food, and service
  • Oversee all administrative requirements including CUP conditions, ABC/TTB stipulations, cash handling, completion of guest liability, property, casualty, worker’s compensation reports and governmental compliance
  • Monitor and ensure staff adherence to health department regulations regarding food handling, storage, temperature, and sanitation
  • Coach, support, and maintain continuous communication with all property staff
  • Coordinate with front and back of house managers to write and oversee schedules that include regular training opportunities and other staff development programs
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures and rules 
  • Develop initiatives to build sales, profitability and guest counts
  • In coordination with management team, be responsible for hiring, scheduling, training, evaluating, and issuing corrective actions for all property personnel, in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
  • Ensure all menu items are made according to recipe and that presentation is up to Modern Times standards
  • Ensure all operational basics and standards are adhered to with total commitment and passion
  • Adhere to company standards and service levels to increases sales and minimize costs
  • Estimate purchasing needs and placing orders within established guidelines
  • Manage profit and loss analysis statement and labor cost reporting, while anticipating trends and recommending solutions
  • Prepare reports regarding food and menu analysis, pour costs, and overall property KPIs
  • Collaborate with the Modern Times team to develop and implement internal and external marketing initiatives, including but not limited to in-store promotions, community involvement, off-site events, social media involvement, and employee engagement
  • Work with the executive team and the local sales force to take advantage of opportunities to host and/or collaborate with accounts and partners in the LA area
  • Become an expert in all things Modern Times Beer and Coffee, and develop menu items that complement these products
  • Be a team player and be able to interact with all levels within the organization
  • Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Other tasks as needed



  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check 
  • Serve Safe Certification is required
  • LEAD Certification is required
  • Minimum of 3 years’ restaurant or hospitality management experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ people manager experience in a hospitality environment
  • Able to use all tools associated with the position including but not limited to draft lines and point of sales systems
  • Able to review and comprehend recipes and other necessary documentation
  • Thorough knowledge of food products, standard recipes and proper food preparation techniques
  • Complete understanding of restaurant operations
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, budgeting experience and full understanding of financials
  • Demonstrated word processing and spreadsheet computer applications
  • Able to positively observe, communicate with and direct the actions of subordinates
  • Able and willing to work in the front of house and back of house
  • Able and willing to work evenings, holidays, and weekends
  • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Restaurant Management or other culinary studies
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine love and aptitude for meeting and interacting with people
  • Strong problem solving skills through ability to diagnose and implement solutions
  • Thorough attention to detail and desire to take initiative
  • Must adhere to company’s policies and procedures
  • The desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company



  • Up to 20% travel time may be required to other Modern Times’ properties



  • Able to stand, walk, and be on your feet for prolonged periods
  • Able to read and follow written English instructions
  • Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 55 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools
  • Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces
  • Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
  • Abe to move 165-pounds, using appropriate techniques and tools
  • Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
  • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
  • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards



Full-time employees become eligible for benefits on the first 1st after 30 days of employment (if your start date is May 15th, you’d be eligible for benefits July 1st).

Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community. We plan to open new locations in downtown LA & Anaheim in 2017, both featuring brewing facilities, restaurants, specialty coffee shops, and much more radness than we can possibly list here. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.
